There are several ways to travel to the town of Volos. The closest airport is the National Airport of Nea Anchialos, which lies around 35 kilometers from Volos and receives a limited number of domestic and international flights during the summer months. However, if you need to travel by air, it will probably be more convenient to fly to Athens or Thessaloniki and reach Volos by road from there. If you’re looking forward to a destination combining heavenly beaches and a vibrant nightlife scene, the best route to choose is the one from Volos to Skiathos. However, if you would rather immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Sporades in a more tranquil ambiance, you can consider the routes from Volos to Skopelos and from Volos to Alonissos. In fact, the former is a must for Mamma Mia! fans, as it is the island where the immensely popular musical was shot!

Nestled at the foot of the heavenly Mount Pelion in central Greece, Volos is a lovely coastal city allowing visitors to combine stunning natural landscapes with the charms of the Pagasetic Gulf. It is identified with the ancient city of Iolcus, whence Jason and his Argonauts set out to look for the Golden Fleece, while during the early 20th century it evolved into a vibrant industrial and commercial center. Beautiful churches, stately mansions, and industrial facilities that have been turned into exhibition areas spring up here and there among the densely-built blocks of flats, while the seaside promenade gives the town a unique ambiance.

Note: The city features a tourist information kiosk, where visitors can find out all the necessary information to organize their trip!

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Volos is during the summer, between June and August, when the weather is warm and sunny, and you can enjoy the magnificent beaches that dent the coasts of Magnesia. However, if you prefer traveling during a quieter season, we recommend May or September, when the weather is nearly summer-like as well. Alternatively, the traditional villages of Pelion are a great destination during the winter too!

Best things to do

In brief, the best things to do in Volos are to wander around the scenic waterfront promenade of the Argonauts, take in the splendid views of the city from the verdant Goritsas Hill, and swim in the crystalline waters of such gorgeous beaches as Anavros, Agios Stefanos and Soutrali. In terms of sightseeing, there are several interesting museums that you can explore, like the Volos City Museum, the Archaeological Museum, the Giorgio de Chirico Art Center and the Industrial Museum, to name but a few. Before leaving Volos, do take the time to savor mouthwatering mezedes at the famous tsipouradika, where you can accompany the local specialties with excellent tsipouro. Going on day trips to the dreamy Pelion and island-hopping to the Sporades are yet more great things to do.

Urban buses connecting the port to the various districts of Volos are the most affordable option for those traveling on a budget. Tickets can be procured at the official ticket offices and automatic vending machines or other spots around the town. Travelers can also purchase a ticket directly from the bus driver, but in this case, the cost will be greater than the standard fare.
